We Quote From the Label

The thing that shapes how we work is simple enough to say in one sentence. Every window sold legally in California carries an NFRC label with independently tested performance numbers printed on it, the California Energy Code decides whether your replacement is legal by reading those numbers, and almost nobody selling windows walks a homeowner through what they mean. So we do.

The Two Numbers

U factor is how quickly heat conducts through the whole assembly. Frame, glass, spacer, all of it, measured together. Lower is better, and the current prescriptive requirement for a replacement window in a house like yours is a maximum of 0.30.

SHGC is the solar heat gain coefficient. It is the fraction of the sun’s energy hitting the glass that ends up inside as heat. Lower means less. The prescriptive maximum sits at 0.23.

Both are printed on the sticker. Both get filed on the energy compliance form for your permit. An inspector at the final will read the sticker on the installed window and compare it against that form, which is why we ask everyone to leave the labels on until sign off.

Why We Talk About Orientation

Riverside gets long hot dry summers and unforgiving late afternoon sun on anything facing west. In a climate like that, the heat you are fighting arrives as sunlight through glass far more than it conducts through frames. That makes SHGC the number that changes how a room actually feels, even though U factor gets most of the attention in advertising.

The practical consequence is that the right glass is not the same on every wall of the same house. A west facing slider over a patio wants aggressive solar control. A north facing bedroom window gets almost no direct sun and can take a higher SHGC and more visible light instead, so the room does not end up dim. We are happy to spec two glass packages on one order and we will explain the difference before you sign anything.

What We Will Talk You Out Of

If your dual pane is fogged but the frame is square, the sash is sound and the hardware works, that is a failed seal and it is often a glass unit replacement rather than a window replacement. If your existing windows already carry a compliant sticker and they operate properly, replacing them for energy reasons alone will not pay you back on a sensible timescale, and we will say so.
